Description

Stamp of Romania; 1976; commemorative stamp of the issue "Daco-Roman archaeological findings"; stamp motive with a figure of the goddess Hecate, parts of a Roman bas-relief tablet, and a Roman figure of the god Bacchus, all as archaeological artefacts from the Banat region of Romania; stamp postmarked
Note:
The Banat region (South west Romania) was fell under Roman rule during the Dacian wars of the Emperor Trajan in 101 or 102 A.D. or before. The Roman Army under Emperor Aurelius withdrew again from this region in 273 A.D. After came the Sarmatians in these areas until around of 290 A.D., as the Goths came, but which were forced out again by the Huns around of 400 A.D.. The stamp is showing a statue of the goddess Hecate, which is in the Greek mythology the goddess of the magic powers, of the witchcraft, of all ghosts, of necromancy and sorcery. Also is she the godly guardian of all knowledge about herbs and poisonous plants. She shall have her origings in the pre-antique "Thrace" region. Beside of this is depicted on the stamp a part of an Roman bas-relief, and beside of that a figure of the Bacchus, the Roman god of the vine and the alcoholic jag. "Bacchus" was also a byname of the Italic god "Liber pater" (pre- and early Roman) and as such also for the Greek god Dionysos.
