Summary[edit]

Description

Stamp of Romania; 1970; commemorative stamp of the issue "Frescos from Romanian Monasteries"; stamp is showing a fresco from the "Moldavian Monastery" at the Romanian village Vatra Moldoviței (contemporary district of Suceava, the "Suceava" is a river); The stamp motive shows the a detail of the fresco painting "Ruler Petru Rares with his family".; meant is Petru IV Rareș (1478-1546 (other sourcesː ca.1482-1546, 1487-1546); reign as King of Moldavia 1527-1538 and 1541-1546).; The figure in the background with halo is the Virgin Mary. The woman on the side of Petru Rares as his wife (with crown) is not exact determinable. Petru was married four onces: a) with Maria (married 1502, killed 1529), b) with Jelena Branković (Serbian princess, married 1530), c) with Jekatarina (from the Saxons of Kronstadt), and d) with an unknown woman (The son from this marriage was later a pretender (but not an occupant) to the Moldavian throne.). The depicted figure must be one of these four women. (A nine-jag crown is the gravitas of a King/Queen or Emperor/Empress.); stamp postmarked
Note:
The monastery was built in 1532 during the reign of the Moldovian ruler Petru IV Rareș. The "Annunciation Church" of this monastery is decorated with many frescos in the interior as well as at exterior "...finished five years after the church was built ... The large and vivid Siege of Constantinople frescoes were inspired by a poem dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as a thanksgiving for her intervention in saving Constantinople from a Persian attack....".
