Summary[edit]

Description

Just as Joe Toscano was speaking about how the Eureka flag has never flown from the top flag pole of Ballarat Town Hall, how the City of Ballarat and many businesses exploit and make money off the Eureka story with mostly very poor support to the memory of those who died, I looked up and saw this framing of the Australian flag by the statue of Queen Victoria.

There was no official flag raising this year, no bunting to celebrate the day on the streets of the city, the Eureka Flag at Bakery Hill in tatters, the Diggers Memorial in the cemetery all but forgotten. The City of Ballarat has lost it's way, and it's a national shame.

The 159th anniversary of Eureka Stockade rebellion was commemorated with a day long series of events organised by the Anarchist Media Institute from a 4am dawn vigil, Eureka Awards ceremeny at Bakery Hill, a long march through the streets of Ballarat to the Old Ballarat Cemetery, a visit to the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka to see the Eureka Flag finally brought home to it's origins in Eureka Park, the site of the Eureaka Stockade; and concluding with a dinner at the Eureka Stockade Hotel with a guest speaker: Dr. Anne Beggs-Sunter on the topic of ‘Eureka plays and films over the years’.
