Summary[edit]
DescriptionQueen Elizabeth's Cup, Kilkenny Cathedral. Silver. (30364758663).jpg |
I was once accused of being a "pot hunter", when I stood in for a missing team member and we won a race - but I wish it had been a pot as beautiful as this one. What might be the story behind Queen Elizabeths cup? (Which precedes the current QE2, Britain's longest serving monarch, by some years)... Today's "pot hunters", [/photos/20727502@N00/ guliolopez] and [/photos/66311327@N05/ B-59], almost simultaneously found a comprehensive entry from the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (a society that was once - fittingly - a Kilkenny based organisation). The journal article was written by R. Wyse Jackson and covered the ecclesiastical silver collections of Kilkenny. The writer identifies this piece of silver as an "Elizabethan Cocoanut Flagon", with apparently viable ties to Elizabeth I. The full text of the article is included by the guys in the comments, and gives credence to the claim that this 16th century silver flagon was presented by Elizabeth I to her then chaplain Jonas Wheeler. The inscription seemingly reads in full: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of Glorious Memory gave this cup to the Right Revd. Dr. Jonas Wheeler, When he was promoted to the See of Ossory. Mrs. Sarah Wheeler, Relict of a Descendant from him, Daughter to Arch Bishop Vesey and Sister of Bishop Vesey, presented it to Dr. Richard Pococke Lord Bishop of Ossory, who leaves it to his Successors Bishops of Ossory" Photographer: Thomas H.
