Summary[edit]

Description
English: Horses from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in Knightsbridge have reported for duty after a two-month holiday running wild in Leicestershire.

The farrier is filing one of the horses hooves.

The horses, icons of immaculate British state ceremonial, have returned relaxed after their extended break at grass.

The troopers in Hyde Park Barracks now have a challenge on their hands to transform the long haired, bearded, mud caked, semi-feral beasts back into proud, sleek steeds fit for The Queen.

The Household Cavalry consists of The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals. They are the oldest and most senior regiments in the British Army and are split between two different units equipped to perform two quite different roles.

The Household Cavalry Regiment (HCR) has an operational role in armoured fighting vehicles which has seen them at the forefront of Britain's military operations including the Falklands (1982), the Gulf (1990), Bosnia, Kosovo and most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan.
