Description

Pvt. Daniel Knight (CP 989), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private Daniel Knight, Company G, 4th New York Heavy Artillery, shows a wound to his right shoulder sustained on April 2nd, 1865, at the battle of Fort Damnation, Virginia. Caption reads: “Gunshot wound of shoulder. Pvt Dan’l Knight Co. G 4th N.Y.H.A.”

History is on reverse: “Daniel Knight. Hospital Number, 20,534. Daniel Knight age 27, private Company G, 4th N.Y.H.A. was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital from City Point April 5th, with a gunshot wound, right shoulder, received April 2nd 1865, the ball, a Minnie, entering anterior to head of humerus passing around it, and making its exit at axillary space. When admitted into this Hospital the wound was much inflamed, which however by antiphlogistic and supporting treatment soon disappeared, and the wound shortly after suppurated freely. On April 11th the wound was attacked with erysipelas, which yielded to treatment and the wound healed rapidly. May 12th, the wound has entirely healed. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols., In charge.”
