at chestnut; breast and belly white In winter andImmature. Above, back brownish, speckled with white; throatwhite instead of chestnut. Also called Red-throated Diver. Asmaller bird than the preceding ; habits and notes similar.Breeds. North of New England. A common spring and fallmigrant, and not uncommon winter visitor along the coast and oc-casionally on inland waters. ALCTD/E: AUKS, MURRES AND PUFFINS13. Fratercula arctica PUFFIN. 13 inchesAdult. In summer. Above blackish. Below, sides of head grayish; breast white. A black band all around neck; bill redand deep like a parrots ; feet red. In winter and Immature. The sides of the head are dark gray and the bill smaller. Called SeaParrot by the fishermen. They dive and swim under water, are rather tame and look like smallducks with very short necks.Note. A hoarse grunting. Nest. On rocky islands, in burrows or in crevices of rock. Breeds. On Maine coast and northward. Awinter visitor on the open sea, along the coast south to Chatham.
