Waseem, aged 10, pictured under a temporary shelter made from heavy-duty plastic sheeting, in a village in Pakistan's Sindh province. Waseem's family is being helped by UKaid from the British government, working in conjunction with the NGO Concern and local Pakistani partners. Waseem now has a tent to sleep in at night, and his family have also received non-food items such as sleeping mats, washing bowls, utensils, tools and personal hygiene kits. Concern is also working to install new water pumps and latrines in Waseem's village to provide clean water and sanitation facilities, again with support from the UK. Waseem and his family were forced to leave their home during the extreme flooding of July and August 2010. They were only able to return to their village in November, to find that their home had been washed away. “We had to leave the village without taking anything when the flood came. We tried to find a safe place, but there wasn’t anywhere”, Waseem says. “Eventually a tractor with a trailer rescued us and took us to a camp. But there were no tents so we had to sleep in the open. It was really hard” “The best thing we have got from this aid is the shelter”. “I used to go to school, but not any more. All my books are gone. The school is gone. Everything is gone”, he says.“I want to go to school, but I don’t have a pencil or a pen. Without these, I can only learn by heart.” “I feel like I’ve forgotten everything I already learnt at school. All I can remember is the flood. I’d like to become a teacher or a doctor but at the moment we don’t have any school here”, he says disappointedly. The UK will also be helping 200,000 children like Waseem get back to school, by funding the repair of 1,500 school buildings that were damaged in the floods and providing 200 temporary learning facilities across Sindh and the Punjab. There is a long way to go for Waseem and his family in terms of re-building their home and their lives, but this essential humanitarian aid is supporting them as they return to their village and begin the process of recovery.
