the illustration willdemonstrate this. This picture was taken from anantique vase. When we consider the Assyrian, thehair was worn of a pretty good length and curled atthe ends, as is very well shown in the figure whichalso depicts the broad band encircling the head. Asimple hair-dressing was that of an Athenian bellewhich may readily be perceived in the accompanyingillustration. The Roman ladys hair-dressing was cer-tainly more ornate as well as becoming. In borhinstances, the chief as well as paramount questionwas to present a good appearance. It would seemthat the women of Gaul exerted no particular painsto render themselves more attractive. But, of course,in those times they were hardly classed as being evencivilized, much less enlightened. As we progress intime we will find hair-dressing more complicated andornate. After this consideration of the dressing of hairwe must naturally come to the dressing of the hairin the Middle Ages. After that, we will describe it in Page Fifty-Six

It is more especially so today whenwe take into consideration our more intimate relationswith Oriental nations. When we come to medieval times we find that thehair dressing of women was quite simple, a fact easilydetermined by references to portraits of the period. Examples of this kind are numerous and putus very much in mind of the Ancient Greek andRoman women not to mention the Assyrian andEgyptian o
