Summary[edit]

Description

Oxfam is running public health campaigns to help prevent disease, including training sessions like this one. Florence Uwineza (in pink top) is Oxfam's public health team leader and been part of the emergency response since the start:

“Our team was at Kigeme camp when the first people began to be transferred from the transit centre at Nkamira. We greeted them at the entrance and handed out key messages about latrine use and safe hygiene so that they knew about the importance of keeping toilets clean and washing hands right from their arrival. In DRC practices are a bit different, so we knew it would be important to educate people about the use of latrines and so on.

"We’ve been working together with MIDIMAR (the government) and others to make sure that people had access to all the facilities they needed. Initially there were some cases of open defecation, but now people are all doing their bit to make proper use of the facilities and keep open spaces clean.

“It’s important for us to think about how we can make our activities as sustainable as possible. Our hygiene clubs are popular because we try and make them as fun as possible – we run games for children, and our older participants put on plays and shows that demonstrate key messages. Participants enjoy the clubs and share what they’ve learnt with their neighbours so we can spread our messages as far as possible.”
