Today we went to the museum of contemporary art, Kiasma, to see a beautifully curated exhibition of the work of Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland. His work is ideologically liberal, sexually optimistic and anatomically impossible, but it's all executed with the most tremendous skill. I've never seen such exquisite work in pencil. The exhibition highlighted a lot about his personal history, and how having been born in 1920, he had sexual encounters with German soldiers which is where his fetishism for leather and uniforms is rooted. His service to, and indeed influence on, gay culture across the western hemisphere was huge and that too was wonderfully illustrated. A fascinating exhibition, but I'll be laying off the bockwurst for a little while. |
