Description

"Proclamation to the People of New Orleans, 12/20/1803"

Printed proclamation from William ("Guillaume"/"Guillermo") C.C. Claiborne, in English, French, and Spanish, as incoming governor of the U.S. Mississippi Territory, and "exercising the powers of Governor General and Intendant of the Province of Louisiana" officially announcing that the province was now part of the United States of America. Issued at New Orleans, 20 December 1803.

Following Senate ratification of the Louisiana Purchase in October, 1803, this three-language broadside was written to announce the United States’ purchase of the Louisiana Territory and to clarify for the people of New Orleans their citizenship status.
