Pte Gregory was born and educated in Victoria, Australia. Before the outbreak of war, he qualified and worked as a solicitor. Pte Gregory enlisted in 7 Reinforcement of 21 Battalion, 6 Infantry Brigade and went into camp in August 1915. On 18 November he embarked for service in Egypt. Seven months later he was transferred to 59 Battalion, charged with guarding the Suez Canal and carrying out desert patrols. The battalion was ordered to the Western Front in June 1916 for the start of the Battle of the Somme . Private Gregory served with the Machine Gun Section of C Company. He was killed in action, aged 31, on 19 July 1916 during an assault on German trenches near Armentières (Français : Tué le 19 juillet 1916 à l'âge de 31 ans pendant un assaut contre les tranchées allemandes près d'Armentières).
