Summary[edit]

Description

Born enslaved, André Cailloux served in the 1st Louisiana Native Guards, one of the fi rst African American regiments in the Union. In May 1863, he was killed after leading repeated charges against Confederate sharpshooters in the Battle of Port Hudson, Louisiana. Thousands attended his funeral, and he became a symbol for African American

heroism.
