The BM register describes the set as costume prints. This is unlikely, as the costumes contain little detail. The poses adopted by the figures, as well as the props some of them are holding (such as the set of keys in E,8.82) suggests that these are more likely to be illustrations to a play or tale. This is confirmed by letterpress text on the verso of some of the cuttings, which contains German verse of a satirical and moralizing nature. None of the characters are named in the text, and from the existing fragments it has not been possible to identify the play.

Note that the attribution to Schäufelein is doubtful.
