Summary[edit]
DescriptionPrincipal window, The Minster Church of St Andrew - Plymouth - geograph.org.uk - 1598856.jpg |
English: Principal window, The Minster Church of St Andrew - Plymouth There has been a church on the site of St. Andrews since Saxon times the first named vicar being recorded in 1087. The church has been associated with many notable figures including Catherine of Aragon, Sir Francis Drake, Sir John Hawkins, the Pilgrim Fathers, Captain Bligh of the Bounty and Sir Francis Chichester over the centuries.
Burnt out during the 1941 Blitz a wooden board bearing the word RESURGAM (I will rise again) was placed over the North door reflecting Christian hope in those dark days. The church did rise again and is graced with six John Piper windows that bring light and colour into this symbol of hope. The church was awarded the title of Minster on 29th November 2009 in recognition of the part it has played in ministering to the needs of Plymothians over the centuries. |
