Prince of Wales and William George Armstrong at Cragside, during the Royal Visit to Newcastle in 1884 by Henry Hetherington Emmerson

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and his sons Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale and Prince George Frederick Ernest Albert (later George V), with William George Armstrong on a terrace at Cragside, during the Royal Visit to Newcastle and Cragside in 1884, painted and titled The Royal Visit in 1884 by Henry Hetherington Emmerson. Watercolour on paper.
Henrietta Heald, in her book William Armstrong: Magician of the North, writes about the paintingː "Although he was the guest of a nouveau riche industrialist rather than someone of ancient lineage, the Prince of Wales showed no snobbery in his dealings with Armstrong. One of Emmerson’s paintings shows the prince and his two sons sitting in relaxed fashion on the terrace at Cragside, dressed in easy country garb – one smoking, another holding a local newspaper – all listening intently to their host’s words of wisdom."
