К.Е.Маковский. Князь Репин на пиру у Ивана Грозного. 1880-е


Возможно, задумал Константин Маковский большую композицию на тему из русской истории, но по неизвестным причинам не написал ее. Остался этот выразительный эскиз и, что особенно оценили современники, со всеми реалистическими подробностями воссоздающий быт и нравы времен Ивана Грозного. Героем художник сделал не царя, а князя Михаила Петровича Репнина, чей род происходил от святого Михаила, князя Черниговского. Прославился Репнин походом в Ливонию в 1558 году, а позже стал жертвой борьбы Ивана Грозного с боярами. Маковский обратился к рассказу Алексея Курбского: на "маскированный вечер" пригласил Иоанн IV Михаила Петровича и со словами: "Веселись с нами" надел на него шутовскую маску. Репнин сорвал и растоптал маску, а по прошествии нескольких дней был убит в церкви.
