Summary[edit]

Description
English: Early stage in making a pontoon bridge, Western Front, during World War I. The first stage of making a pontoon, or temporary floating bridge. A group of soldiers are pulling a flat barge into position at the edge of a river. Two other similar barges are waiting to be positioned. Above them there is a towering cliff full of rubble, including broken brick walls. Some of the rubble appears to have been netted to stop it sliding down into the water.

Pontoon bridges were of particular value during a rapid advance as they could be assembled quickly for troops to cross. They could also be positioned in more easily-defended ground, whereas existing bridges were obvious points for the opposing side to defend.
[Original reads: 'Preparing to make a pontoon bridge.']
