tiseptic dressing is desired. It comes in glass jars inquantities similar to the two foregoing varieties. The forms in which gauze are used in podiatry prac-tice are numerous. The following are the most important: (1) Band ag e.Gauze, in varyingwidths, makes a highlypractical ban;dagingmaterial. Cotton band-ages are used, but can-not compare with eventhe poorer grades oflinten gauze for dura-bility. The reader isreferred to the sub-heading, B a n d a g-ing, at the e n d ofthis article. (2) Large gauzesquares. It is a com-mon practice amongpodiatrists to cut largequantities of gauzeinto pieces about threeinches square. Thesehave two uses: (a), todry off instrumentsdripping with alcoholor whatever germici-dal solution has been used, before operation, and (b),as a dressing applied over the affected area. In the latterinstance this size square is practical where the wholedistal end of the toe is to be covered, as in applying a moistdressing in the treatment of ingrown nail, or where there

LARGE GAUZE SQUARE FOR DRESSINGINGROWN NAIL 64 PODIATRY is a large area to be covered on the dorsum, plantar orlateral sides of the foot or upon the lower leg. As a wipefor instruments, one thickness, and as a dressing, three orfour thicknesses are used. (3) Small gauze squares. These are about an inch anda half square and have their principal use as a dressing tocover one side of a toe nail, or to cover a small area of theintegument, or as a wick in the drainage of a large sinusor deep ulcerative condition. Both the large and smallsquares, cut to size, are sterilized by heat and are thenplaced in a formaldehyde sterilizer until used; this assurestheir absolute asepsis. (4) Nail Groove and Sinus Pledgets. For the moreconfined areas of the nail groove or for a small sinus, gauzeis cut into small pieces measuring about one-half inch longand one-eighth inch wide.
