Rght Hercules Pillar and Potosí Mint marks from a real de ocho ("Spanish dollar")

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The right Hercules Pillar and the two Potosí Mint ("PTSI") monograms from a 1776 real de ocho ("Spanish dollar") silver coin.

It has been conjectured that the origin of the dollar sign is either or both of these design on the "Spanish dollars" from Potosi, which circulated widely in North America and Europe by the late 1700s.

The images are not to the same scale.
