Title
Post Medieval trade token from Derbyshire
Description
English: Copper alloy Derbyshire trade token dating to around 1670. These tokens were circulated between traders and their local customers in almost the same way as coins of the realm. They took the place of small change when there were shortages but fell out of use when the government decided to introduce copper halfpence and farthings and prohibit traders tokens.

This token bears the Butchers coat of arms on one side (a sheild with crossed axes and animal heads in the lower part) with the inscription 'Butcher of Bonsall' around the edge. The other side has 'His Halfe Peny' in the centre and 'John Balme [1670]' around the edge.

The token weighs 2.15g and measures 20.5mm in diameter and 1.06mm in thickness.
