Post-medieval copper candle holder
Description
English: Candleholder copper alloy dating to the 14th century AD. The holder is completely sheet with two parts for the stem. The slightly tapered folded cup has a lapped joint and an open bottom. The cup is held in place by sliding the slot along the stem. The bottom of the stem has a longitudinal slot in which the ratcheted spike pivots on a copper alloy pin, trapped between the two parts of the stem is a tab that pivots on the lower of two rivets that secure the cup to the stem. The bent ratcheted spike's 3 slots, into which the tab seats, allows the candle to be adjusted to different angled and the front side of the head is angled to form 3 ridges. Similar to figure 899 in Read. B. Metal Artefacts of Antiquity: A Catalogue of Small finds from Specific Areas of the United Kingdom. Volume 1. Portcullis. 2001. The length is 35mm, the width is 25mm, thickness mm and the weight 9.41g.The length is 68mm, the width is 32mm thickness 13mm and the weight 13.58g.
