Title
Post-Medieval Dress-pin
Description
English: An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy and gilded dress-pin with filigree and granulated ornament (1500-1600).

The lower part of the shaft is missing.

This pin has a hollow spherical head with applied filigree and granulated ornament in the form of circlets punctuated by knops. A large flat knop extends from the apex of the sphere. The pin head is divided into two hemispheres by an equatorial transverse soldered join. On each of the hemispheres are three large filigree circlets that contain three smaller circlets surrounding a central rounded knop. The spaces between the larger circlets, close to the join, contain a small circlet with an adjacent rounded knop. These latter circlets are the same size as those within the large circlets. The soldered shaft of pin is circular in cross-section and is bent at an angle of about 45°. It may have been bent deliberately.

Overall height: c. 23.0mm; height of head: 13.33mm; diameter of head: 12.68mm; diameter of shaft: close to the head: 2.08mm. Weight: 2.19g.

It is drab green with tiny flecks of gilding within the crevices on the head.

This type of pin is often made of silver-gilt and frequently recorded as Treasure. For example, see finds from: Lenham, Kent (2002 T190; TAR 2002: no. 143); Cholsey, Oxfordshire (2000 T214; TAR 2000: no. 191); East Lyng, Somerset (2000 T253; TAR 2000: no.192); Wilmington, Devon (2004 T94; TAR 2004: no. 287); Northchapel, West Sussex (2004 T38; TAR 2004: no. 293); Brailes, Warwickshire (2004 T448; TAR 2004: no. 295); Durnford, Wiltshire (2007 T89; TAR 2007: no. 334); Beccles area, Suffolk (2008 T445; TAR 2008: no. 384); Kettlethorpe, Lincolnshire (2008 T 521; TAR 2008: no. 385); Freshwater, Isle of Wight (Treasure 2013 T82; PAS IOW-930A63) and Newport, Isle of Wight (Treasure 2013 T625; PAS IOW-45CD50).
