Notes
Portrait of the painter Silvestro Lega (1889)
Corcos met Lega when already a serious eye disease was leading the artist to progressive blindness that, preventing him from painting, would harden his character beyond measure. The portrait records the situation of those unhappy years when, Corcos himself writes, "unjustly tarred by misery and sometimes by hunger," Lega wore "invariably a kind of brown overcoat with a short cape [and] the hand that encircled the cape there under the chin was always gloved in black, a poor glove frayed and whitened by time [... ] poor Lega no longer possessed but one glove, and he changed it from hand to hand whenever the left instead of the right was to make his appearance in the eyes of the world !
