Portrait of the Count of Astorg (French school)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: French School circa 1760

Portrait of the Count of Astorg

Oil on canvas

60,5 x 50 cm ; 23⅞ by 19¾ in.

This engaging portrait is of magnificent quality and in very fine condition, but its attribution remains a mystery. The names of Roslin, Drouais, Louis-Michel Vanloo and finally Louis Tocqué have been proposed, but the painting cannot be ascribed with confidence to any of them.

The identification of the model with the Comte d’Astorg is based on an old inscription, partly erased, which can be seen on the frame’s upper crosspiece. If it is to be believed, this could be a portrayal of Jacques Pierre Prothade Hippolyte, Count of Astorg, born in 1759, which would suggest that the portrait might date to about 1770.
Français : Ecole française vers 1760

Portrait du comte d'Astorg

Huile sur toile

60,5 x 50 cm ; 23⅞ by 19¾ in.
