Portrait of the 'Jupiter', flagship of Cornelis Jol at the Battle of the Downs

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Portrait of the ‘Jupiter’ viewed from the port quarter. The masts and a flag and pendant at the main are roughly sketched in. On the tafferel, Jupiter sits astride an eagle.

The drawing is inscribed with the following inscription: t schip den Jupiter gevoert by den / commdr houtebeen int gevecht tegen / de spaense in duijs (the ship Jupter commanded by Commodore Houtebeen in the battle against the Spanish in the Downs). Cornelis Jol, nicknamed ‘Houtebeen’ commanded a squadron in the Battle of the Downs in 1639.

This is a work in thick pencil with a large correction in the waterline aft and only a flat wash over the stern. The inscription and the masthead are on pieces of paper added above and on the left at a later date, but probably before about 1650, since the pendant is shown above the flag instead of below it.
