and three years later he received anappointment in the accountants office of the EastIndia Company, a position which he held for morethan thirty years, until 1825, when he was sufferedto retire with a life annuity of £450. His sister, Mary Ann Lamb (born in 1765; diedin 1847), was most intimately connected with theentire life of her brother. In 1796, in a suddenparoxysm of insanity, she stabbed her mother tothe heart, killing her instantly, and for the remain-ing half-century of her life she underwent not un-frequent attacks of her mental malady. CharlesLamb, then barely one-and-twenty, devoted him-self to the care of his afflicted sister; and in theintervals of her mental malady she shared in hisliterary tastes and labors. She wrote Mrs. Leices-ter s School, a collection of juvenile tales, and wasjoint author with him of Tales from Shakespeare,and of a small volume of Poetry for Children.
