While engaged in theseliterary works, and busily employedupon a new serial story for TheCornhill, Thackeray, who had forseveral years suffered occasionally fromdisease, was suddenly called away, theimmediate cause of his death being aneffusion on the brain. He had retiredto rest as usual, at his home in Lon-don, on the night of Christmas Eve,1863, and was found at day, lyingwith life extinct, in an attitude of calmrepose. A few days afterwards hisremains were interred in the ruralKensal Green Cemetery, followed tothe grave by the chief men of lettersand artists of the metropolis, who lov-ed and admired the man. Among thenumber were Charles Dickens, Antho-ny Trollope, the poet Browning; and,with other artists, his life-long friendGeorge Cruikshank, and his later asso-ciate in Punch, John Leech.
