Português: Porto do Funchal, vai ser negociado novo contrato para a sua construção Época de governador do engenheiro e capitão de Artilharia Ernesto Florêncio da Cunha (1890-1980) O engenheiro Florêncio da Cunha pautou a sua atuação como governador civil por uma grande descrição, como depois toda a sua vida, não deixando, no entanto, de intervir decididamente, quando entendeu encontrarem-se em causa os interesses do Distrito. Em setembro de 1927, por exemplo, tendo sido assinado novo contrato para a construção do molhe de cais do porto do Funchal, com a firma “Fumasil Company Limited”, com sede em Londres, altamente lesivo dos interesses nacionais, conseguiu a anulação do mesmo. Transcreve o Diário de Notícias do Funchal, a partir do jornal O Século de Lisboa, de 15 desse mês, “que o Governo, face às reclamações que lhe foram apresentadas e também levadas ao Parlamento da República” anulara o contrato em causa e, a partir do congénere de Lisboa, de 18, que o “governador civil do Funchal, em nome dos altos interesses do Distrito, telegrafou aos Ministros, felicitando-os por terem anulado o contrato daquele porto, ato que prestigia e honra o Governo da Ditadura”. |
