Summary[edit]

Description
English: Porphyritic trachyte from Ontario, Canada. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

Porphyritic rocks are crystalline-textured igneous rocks having a mixture of large crystals (phenocrysts) and small crystals (groundmass). The large, light-colored, angular masses in the rock seen above are potassium feldspar phenocrysts. The dark brown-colored groundmass is very finely-crystalline plagioclase feldspar and biotite mica.

Not much specific geologic information seems to be available on this material from Bannockburn, Ontario, despite it being a famous occurrence and a distinctive rock. The porphyritic trachyte from the site is reported to in an igneous dike, which is a planar intrusion that cuts across country rocks.

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site attributed to Bannockburn Township, apparently ~1.4 air-kilometers northeast of Rahn Lake & ~19.4 air-kilometers west-northwest of the town of Matachewan, northwestern Timiskaming District, eastern Ontario, southeastern Canada
