Summary[edit]

Description

Porphyritic rhyolite from the Pleistocene of Wyoming, USA. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

This volcanic lava sample comes from the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming. It has a porphyritic texture, which refers to crystalline-textured igneous rocks having a mixture of large crystals (phenocrysts) and small crystals (groundmass). The light-colored masses in the rock are feldspar phenocrysts. The medium gray-colored material is the groundmass. Yellowstone has numerous rhyolite lava flows that erupted after an explosive "supervolcanic" eruption ~640,000 years ago.
