| Description |
Poppies still grow in the battlefields of northern France, 100 years after they came to signify the allied dead of the First World War. The area in my picture was part of the front line in the first battle of the Somme, on 1 July 1916. Allied troops advanced from the right towards the village of Beaumont-Hamel, off to the left. The attack started by several underground explosions being set off to weaken the defences. On the horizon, the group of trees seen today is where one such huge explosion happened and formed the Hawthorn Ridge Crater. On that day 19,240 allied men were killed with hardly any ground being taken in this area. RIP. This same scene was filmed at the time and the huge explosion was seen extending high into the air.
