| Description |
Pontochō centres around one long, narrow, cobbled alley running from Shijo-dōri to Sanjo-dōri, one block west of the Kamogawa in Kyoto. Today the area, lit by traditional lanterns at night, contains a mix of very expensive restaurants - featuring outdoor riverside dining on wooden patios throughout the summer - geisha houses and tea houses, brothels, bars, and cheap eateries. It has a unique atmosphere - elegance and traditional beauty really do balance with seediness and the slightest hint of danger. Pontochō / 先斗町 |
