Summary[edit]

Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

For centuries, majestic ponderosa pines around the dunes have been traditionally used by regional tribes. Some of these trees are hundreds of years old, and have sections of bark missing where the sweet inner bark has been collected for food, medicine, or ceremonial purposes (see photo in comments below). And, this pine's long needles can be bunched together to form hair brushes.

Those who peeled these trees in the 19th century also left fleeting footprints upon the giant dunes, perhaps with the same sense of wonder that people from all over the world experience here today. Utes and other regional tribes continue to maintain a special relationship with Great Sand Dunes NPP, participating in ceremonies, visiting these heritage trees, providing important insights to park staff, and simply enjoying this awe-inspiring place!
