f the premises are fifteen large circularstone vats used in the trade. In a shop near this was found,towards the end of 1873, the impress or mould of a body byfar the most perfect that has yet been discovered. Thehead of the cast that has been taken from it has all theappearance of a terra-cotta bust, so sharply are the featuresdefined. We have given an engraving of it at p. 476. Among objects of art recently discoverd we may mention inthe first place, from its immediate connection with Pompeii, arepresentation of the amphitheatre, of which we have givena cut at p. 247. Another remarkable painting, of which weannex an engraving, represents the Rape of the Palladium. The Rr.pe ( f the Palladium. APPENDIX. 579 excellence of the art, for the perspective is faulty and thefigures, though spirited, are not altogether correct; but inthe subject, and in the way in which the story is told. Thescene represents a grove, or temenos, with a Doric tetrastyletemple of Pallas. The temple is ornamented with festoons,which hang down from the architrave; while the side of it,and great part of uhe front, is covered with an ample veil, orcurtain. In front of the temple is a lofty altar, approachedby two steps; on the top of it the sacrificial flame is stillburning. Behind the altar stands a high pillar, with atripod on its summit. On the right is an Ionic column,having apparently a sepulchral urn on the top. On eachside of it are bases, or tables, adorned like the column itselfwith festoons, and having offerings upon them.
