Its surface outside of the Black Hills israrely too rough for farming, though narrow strips near the larger streams andabout the more conspicuous buttes are not level enough for agriculture. The mineral production of the Black Hills isone of the wonders of the world, the district being famed as the richest hun-dred miles square on earth. The famous Homestake mines are situatedhere.
