В предаукционном каталоге Сотбис 2007 года написано, что предположительно это портрет Маяковского, с которым И. Репина познакомил Чуковский в 1915 г. Репин очень хотел написать его портрет, но передумал после того, как Маяковский побрил голову. Возможно, что это собирательный портрет "Поэта-футуриста". Написан на линолеуме маслом, что И.Р. иногда практиковал после революции, когда не было достаточно материала. Шелушащаяся краска по всей картине намекает на то, что картина написана левой рукой в период, когда И.Р. начал терять функции правой руки. Подпись по-русски в правом нижнем углу и дата 1916
