The rubber bungs were placed up the nose to inhale menthol from the glass bottle. Menthol is a peppermint-scented natural oil used as a pain reliever and to unblock the nose. It is taken to treat common colds and flu. The inhaler comes with a bottle for menthol and fits into a pocket-sized case. The inhaler was made by S Maw & Son and could be bought at most pharmacies.
