Summary[edit]
DescriptionPlumose marking on joint surface in tholeiitic basalt (Clam Falls Volcanics, Mesoproterozoic, ~1.1 Ga; Interstate State Park, Taylors Falls, Minnesota, USA) 1 (23391640349).jpg |
Joints are fractures in rocks along which no differential displacement has occurred. This distinguishes them from faults, along which displacement has taken place. Some joint surfaces have feathery-like features called plumose markings. They consist of an axis and small-scale, radiating-outward ridges. The divergent-direction axis points toward the direction of fracture propagation. Host rocks: tholeiitic basalt, Clam Falls Volcanics, upper Mesoproteozoic, ~1.1 Ga Locality: outcrops above the western banks of the St. Croix River, Interstate State Park, Taylors Falls, eastern Chisago County, eastern Minnesota, USA |
