hile stricture of the urethra is most generally caused by neglectedor badly treated gonorrhoea, it may be induced by inflammation ofthe urethral canal, brought on by other causes, such as colds, ure-thral catarrh, contusion of the parts, strains, passage of calcareousaccretions with the urine, the excessive use of condiments andstimulating drinks. Whatever may be the immediate cause, whilethat cause exists, internal treatment musi be given to modify theacrimony of the urine, to cool and purify the blood, together withlocal treatment of injections into the urethra of something soothingand disinfecting. When the worst stage of the affection supervenes,and stricture actually takes place, a combination of constitutionaland surgical treatment is necessary in the most difficult cases, whilein those of not a very serious character, constitutional remedies, to-gether with such local treatment as the patient can administer him-self without the aid of a physician or surgeon, may be successfully

Among young men about town, gonorrhoea is regarded far tooflippantly, and many are heard to say they dont mind it any morethan a cold in the head, but most of these reckless fellows learntheir mistake in course of time. Aside from strictures and the noend of trouble that may arise from them, gonorrhoea may be earlyfollowed by the most intractable form of rheumatism, and lay aman up for six months, or it may bring on orchitis, swelled and in-flamed testicle, one of the most painful diseases known, and keephim out of business on that account from three to six weeks.
