Summary[edit]

Description
English: Plague Stone in Chapel Lane I am told that this hollowed out stone was filled with vinegar so that during plague times locals could leave money to pay for food. It was thought that the vinegar would disinfect the coins. Compare this with "Pitch & Pay Lane" in Sneyd Park, Bristol (ST5638 7520 to ST5616 7541) where the people did not dare go too close, so would throw the food in exchange for money flung to them.
