Object number: A.2009-9

Medium: paper; photo-emulsion

Description: Airmail pilot George Myers flew for the Post Office Department from June 1, 1923 until September 9, 1927. Prior to his life as an airmail pilot Myers had served as a lieutenant in the army bombing corps during the first World War. He spent most of that time flying out of Chicago, Illinois. Myers and two passengers were killed on July 31, 1927 near New Castle, Indiana. Myers was flying as a commercial aviator, after the Post Office Department turned their airmail routes over to private ownership. The accident occurred just after takeoff when his airplane suddenly dipped upward, and then shot down in a nose spin, crashing near the airport hangar and bursting into flames.
