Notes

Painted for the Abbe de Champeron, a friend of the artist, the present work is one of two large scale portraits the artist painted of the Regent and his official mistress. The other depicting the Regent in armor and Madame de Parabere as Minerva now hangs in the Trianon at Versailles (MV370, INV7839, LP972).
A replique of a much smaller size is recorded (C. Lecarpentier, Galerie des peintres celebres avec des remarques sur le genre de chaque maitre, Paris, Strasbourg, London, 1821, note p.162). A modello for the painting was sold at Sotheby's New York, January 28,1999, lot 444 for $40,250

Estimate: $80,000-120,000
