Après la mort de Charles IV le Bel, Philippe de Valois, petit-fils de Philippe III le Hardi, est nommé régent par les états généraux en 1328. Jeanne d'Évreux, veuve de Charles IV, donnera naissance à une fille et Philippe sera proclamé roi de France.
