L'infant porte le grand cordon de l'Ordre du Saint-Esprit et la croix et ruban rouge de l'Ordre royal de Saint-Janvier. Il est coiffé d'un bonnet à plumets rouge et blanc et est enveloppé dans un manteau bleu fleurdelisé doublé d'hermine.

Au revers un texte manuscrit croit identifier le modèle comme étant Elisabeth Farnèse (1692-1766), seconde épouse de Philippe V, Roi d'Espagne (1683-1746) qui se remarie en 1714 : « Ce portrait fut donné en souvenir par la Farnèsine elle-même à un descendant du graveur Natalis Datti. Il était encore dans cette famille, dont un des derniers membres vivait à Montpellier en 1931. » En réalité, la Farnèsine est la belle-mère ou "seconde mère d'adoption" de notre prince, qui était issu du premier mariage de Philippe V avec Marie-Louise de Savoie (1688-1714), morte de la tuberculose alors qu'il n'avait que 2 ans. Lui-même décèdera d'une maladie à l'âge de 7 ans seulement.

Oeuvre en rapport

Un portrait par Michel-Ange Houasse (1680-1730) daté de 1717 et conservé au Prado figure notre infant Felipe Pedro portant probablement la même robe à parements or et les mêmes décorations (voir illustration ci-contre). [1]
