adbeen summoned to Leipzig by the new Elector, and that a messenger had been sent to Weimar forhim. He now proceeded to Leipzig, where Mauricepromised the theologians ** that he would not allowany papal abuses to be introduced; nor would hetolerate anything contrary to the Word of God,but as a Christian Elector he would protect theWord of God and its ministers to the best of hisability. The theologians were treated with the greatestkindness by Maurice, who lodged them at his ownexpense, and bestowed upon them suitable presents.Melanchthon was offered a professorship at Leipzig, but this was declined in favour of the little neston the Elbe, whither on the 25th he travelled withthe other theologians. He also declined calls toDenmark and to Konigsberg, though at Wittenberghe lived for a time at his own expense. His delightwas to gather up the planks of the shipwreckedUniversity. In almost the same words in twoletters written August lOth, he tells us why he re- C.K., 6. 599.2C. i^., 6: 605.
Text Appearing After Image:
DUKE MORITZ OF SAXONY. FROM A PAINTING BY CRANACH, THE YOUNGER. 1547) The Schmalkald War 325 turned to Wittenberg: Had I declined to come Icertainly would have impeded the restoration of theUniversity. There can be no question as to the motives whichinfluenced Melanchthons choice. They were de-votion to his colleagues, and a desire to re-establishthe university in the interests of the Church. Hehad made no unconditional promise to the sons ofJohn Frederick. He was not a courtier, and hencehe was under no obligation to follow the fortunes ofa fallen court. As a citizen it was his duty to obeythe powers that be, and to try to repair the ruins ofwar. Wittenberg was the original seat of the Re-formation. It were far wiser to restore it than tofound a rival university which was sure to be con-ducted with partisan zeal. Fault was never foundwith his colleagues for returning to their old places;but that he, the most celebrated teacher in Germany, should take service under the apostate Maurice
