Давление насыщенных паров иода вплоть до температуры плавления (113,7 °С при 1 атм в однокомпонентной закрытой системе) ниже давления его паров в тройной точке, на фазовой диаграмме ниже температуры тройной точки имеется только линия сублимации и отсутствует линия плавления, поэтому при нагревании в открытой системе при атмосферном давлении твёрдый иод возгоняется, то есть превращается сразу в пары не плавясь, и, наоборот, при охлаждении иод десублимируется и превращается в кристаллы минуя жидкое состояние. Для превращения в жидкость, то есть для плавления, кристаллы иода нагревают в закрытом сосуде.
