Der Jurist und Rektor der Kölner Universität Petrus van Clapis gehörte zu Bartholomäus Bruyns ersten und treuesten Auftraggebern in Köln. Bruyn porträtierte ihn zwischen 1515 und 1537 mindestens fünf Mal. Das Miniaturbildnis aus dem Jahr 1537 ist das späteste dieser Bildnisreihe.
