Summary[edit]

Description

Chakana Incan cross in the Sacred Plaza. The stone half cross is meant to be completed by its shadow.

A traditional Incan symbol, the tierd cross resembles a series of steps representing the three levels of existence in the world of the Inca. The first step, symbolized by the snake, represents the underworld or death. The second step represents the present human world and is symbolized by the jaguar. The top step represents the celestial plane of the gods and is symbolized by the condor.

The chakana is also the solar calendar, each of the 12 points representing a month of the year, a zodiac constellation, and an important fiesta. The four cardinal points marked the solstices and equinoxes.
